History of Cotton Candy

In 1897, Nashville candy makers William Morrison and John C. Wharton invented cotton candy. They invented a device that heated sugar in a spinning bowl that had tiny holes in it. It formed cotton candy and they called it Fairy Floss. As the bowl spun around, the caramelized sugar was forced through the tiny holes, making feathery candy that melts in the mouth.   Morrison and Wharton introduced Fairy Floss in the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Snokones were invented in 1919 by East Dallas resident Samuel Bert, or "King Sammie" by the locals. He sold his snokones at the State Fair and patented his ice crusher machine the following year when he had a huge success. By the 1950s, he was selling an average of 1 million snokones a year at the state fair. The snokones were served with flavored syrup in a wax cone.    That was how the snokones got their start.
